there are 3 main groups:

And the nomenclature is not always as the name suggested, the nomenclature often result from place they first being discovered. As the result, a substance named after place where neurotransmitter, endocrine(激素 or autocrine(自泌素 come from may actually mainly as messenger(訊息物質 where is not it is named after. Ex.
- noreadrenaline is named after kidney, is mainly act as neurotransmitter but not endocrine(激素
